Part of speech
Words are divided into various parts or classes, according to the function they do in a sentence. Each among them is called Part of Speech. The Parts of Speech are eight in number.
Noun
A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing human quality/idea/experience/feeling. A noun is the name of anything.

आधुनिक अंग्रेजी व्याकरण (Modern English Grammar) में Noun को तीन वर्गों में बाँटा गया है
Pronoun
A pronoun is a word which is used in place of a noun. Pronoun उस शब्द को कहते हैं जो किसी Noun के बदले में प्रयोग किया जाता है।
Adjective
An Adjective is a word which qualifies a noun or a pronoun. An Adjective is a qualifying word.
Verb
A verb is a word which denotes an action, state or possession. A verb is a word which says something about a subject.
Adverb
An adverb is a word that qualifies/modifies the meaning of a verb, an adjective or another adverb.
Preposition
A preposition is a word placed before a noun or a pronoun to show its relation to some other word or words in the sentence.
Conjunction
A Conjunction is a word used to join words, phrases, clauses or sentences together. Conjunction वह शब्द है जो शब्दों, शब्द समूहों, वाक्यांशों, उप-वाक्यों या वाक्यों की जोड़ता है।
Interjection
Words which are used to express some sudden feeling or emotion of human heart are called interjections.
The Same Word Used as Different Parts of Speech
अंग्रेजी शब्दों का वर्गीकरण पूर्व से निश्चित नहीं है। एक ही शब्द तीन-तीन, चार-चार Parts of Speech में हो सकते हैं। हिन्दी या उर्दू में शब्दों की जाति पूर्व से ही निर्धारित है। उस जाति में प्रायः अंतर नहीं आता। जैसे—दूध, यह शब्द संज्ञा है। इसकी जाति कभी नहीं बदलती। पर इसका समानार्थक शब्द 'Milk केवल संज्ञा ही नहीं वह क्रिया भी है। Milk is white- का अर्थ हुआ दूध उजला होता है। यहाँ 'Milk' शब्द Noun है जो एक वस्तु का नाम है। He milks का अर्थ हुआ वह दूध दूहता है। यहाँ 'Milk' शब्द Verb है जो दूध दूहने
Number
इस अध्याय में हम Noun, Pronoun तथा Verb के Number पर क्रमशः विचार करेंगे।
Gender
we can state that gender in English grammar is simply the sexual classification of nouns and pronouns.
Case
The Case of a noun or a pronoun shows its relation to other words in a sentence.
Person
The third person is the person spoken about
Sentence
A sentence is a group of words put together in a certain order giving a complete sense.
Degrees of Comparison
When adjectives and adverbs change in form to show comparison, it is called degree of comparison. जब Adjective या Adverb का रूप तुलना दिखाने के लिए बदलता है, तो उसे Degree of Comparison कहते हैं।
Articles
A, An तथा The को Articles कहते हैं। A / An को Indefinite Article तथा The को Definite Article कहते हैं। A/ An का शाब्दिक अर्थ 'एक' / 'कोई' होता है किन्तु The का कोई अर्थ नहीं होता। Articles Noun को Definite (निश्चित) या Indefinite (अनिश्चित) बनाने में मदद करते हैं।
FORMS OF THE VERB
Ordinary Verbs के पाँच रूप होते हैं, जो Tense (time of an action and its degree of completeness) व्यक्त करने के लिए प्रयोग में लाये जाते हैं। ये इस प्रकार हैं
Tense
When we need to express the time of an action and its degree of completeness, tense is used. As a matter of fact, tense is the expression of change of the forms of verbs.
Subject-Verb Agreement
Sentence Formation (वाक्य-रचना) में Subject (कर्ता) तथा Verb (क्रिया) का सबसे ज्यादा महत्व है। इन दोनों के बीच तालमेल (Agreement) होना अति आवश्यक है। किसी Sentence में Subject के Number तथा Person के अनुसार ही Verb का प्रयोग होता है, यानी कहने का मतलब यह है कि Verb का वही Number तथा Person होता है जो उसके Subject का होता है। इस सम्बन्ध को ही Subject-Verb Agreement कहते हैं।
